Demystifying Psychology

About

This Site
The goals for this site are twofold. First, and foremost, I am interested in helping more people learn to make use of the abundance of cutting edge psychology research in their own lives. Since I was introduced to the world of research as a teen, I am amazed at how inaccessible it is to the general public. Psychologists are characterized as gurus with privileged information about the human psyche. But this is not the case! You can improve your life and health, your relationships, and your understanding of yourself and others through simply learning to apply research in the field of psychology. And that is what I strive to help you do here. I think of myself as a tour guide of sorts, pointing out important studies along the way, but encouraging you to come to your own conclusions about them. I am not here to tell you how to interpret the research, and in fact the second goal of this site is to encourage genuine discussion about the research we reference. Feel free to leave your own thoughts in the comments section for each entry.

As Google Scholar so aptly puts it, I want to encourage others to "stand on the shoulders of giants"...the view of the world from up here is incredible.

About Elise
I am a recent graduate of the University of Florida, with a BA in English and a BS in Psychology. I love it here so much that I stuck around for graduate school! I am now working toward becoming the best psychology teacher I can be. I was inches away from pursuing a PhD in social or counseling psychology, but changed my mind at the last minute. I decided to pursue my true passion of making the wealth of knowledge that comes from research more accessible to everyone, and leave the researching itself in the capable hands of those who live and breathe theory (and the counseling to those with a tougher hide!). I am most interested in actually applying research and theory to real life and in helping to open the door for others who weren't lucky enough to delve into these fascinating topics in college.
I have background and hands-on experience with psychological research in varied fields, including behavioral, social, and counseling psychology. I am an avid reader and I have a soft spot for PP&M-esque folk music. I have also been known to dabble in creative writing and dressage.
Last but certainly not least, I am a long standing volunteer at Horses Helping People, a wonderful hippotherapy program for the disabled in Gainesville, and a big believer in Animal-Assisted Therapy of all kinds.
